Facilitator Profile

Jill McDonnell

My name is Jill McDonnell and I was born in Scotland. I taught Primary school children for a number of years and then moved into adult education which included a range of areas including Adult Literacy programs, Volunteer training, Community Services in TAFE and the WELL program in WES (Workplace Education Services).  After arriving in Sydney I worked for The Smith Family in the Learning for Life program as the Education Support Coordinator and later as the Community Programs Training Manager. I was then involved in establishing the Inner West Community Settlement Service to provide information, referral and assistance to newly arrived migrants and based at AMES in Burwood.

My most recent positions have been with BCS (Baptist Community Services) as the Coordinator of a Personal Care and Flexible Respite program for the frail aged and people with disabilities followed by a Flexible Respite program for children and young people with Disabilities before becoming an Education Officer / Advocate with TARS.

Margaret Small  (Solicitor)

I am the parent of four children. When my youngest child was five my marriage ended and I went to TAFE to study for my HSC again as a mature aged student. I commenced my tertiary education the following year when I was accepted into Macquarie University to study Arts. At the end of the second year I was accepted to study law. I graduated from Arts with a double major in Psychology and Sociology in 1995 and graduated from Law in 1996 and with a diploma in Legal Practice the following year. After completing the 2 years supervised practice in a private firm, I commenced working with the Women’s Legal Resources Centre (WLRC) where I worked for over six years.

My life experience and my previous experience at WLRC - regularly providing advice on our advice line, carrying out Community Legal Education and running a fortnightly advice service in Western and Northern Sydney and various country areas - drew my attention to the specific needs of older women.

At both the State and National Conferences in 2004 I attempted to garner interest in elder law but it was not until the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs report on Older People and the Law in September 2007 that the need was officially recognised in NSW.

The establishment of the Older Person’s Legal Service (OPLS) rapidly ensued under the umbrella of the long established TARS (The Aged-care Rights Service). I was delighted when I heard the news and more delighted when gained one of the positions as a solicitor with OPLS. OPLS has now been providing a much needed service to older people for two years.
