Free Screening Mammograms
Friday, 25 September 2009 17:30
BreastScreen NSW provides a free screening mammogram for women over 40 years of age. Women aged 50-69 are particularly encouraged to take part
Approximately one in nine women in NSW will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. The chances of getting breast cancer increases as women get older, with over 75% of breast cancers detected in women over 50. Early detection of breast cancer while it is small and before it has a chance to spread is the most important factor in determining the survival and recovery of a woman from the disease. Regular screening increases the likelihood that breast cancers are found as early as possible, while they are small.
Within the Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health Service BreastScreen NSW operates screening and assessment services at Royal North Shore Hospital and Gosford Hospital with additional screening sites in Dee Why, Erina, Hornsby, Lindfield and Wahroonga. The BreastScreen NSW van provides a mobile service at selected locations in the Ryde, Northern Beaches and Central Coast Areas.
To make an appointment for a screening mammogram call 13 20 50. An interpreter service is available if required for women from non English speaking backgrounds, call 13 14 50. Each screening appointment should only take approximately 30 minutes.
Early Detection is Vital
