2009 Sydney North Volunteer of the Year Awards

In the traditional spirit of showcasing active volunteers who have shown dedication and initiative in their work Northside Community Forum Inc. and the HACC Regional Volunteer Resource Project co-hosted with the Centre for Volunteering the Sydney North NSW Volunteer of the Year Award 2009.
The ceremony was hosted by Christine Russell, Manager Membership & Community Programs, Northside Community Forum Inc., who reminded the community of the wonderful work of volunteers and she promoted the volunteering cause. Irena Liddell, Executive Officer, Northside Community Forum Inc. welcomed approximately 50 award nominees and nominators. Jacqui Hastings and Tony Frew from the Centre for Volunteering presented certificates of recognition to individual nominees as well as to nominated teams.
The Sydney North winners for 2009 were announced in the three categories, Sydney North Youth, Sydney North Senior, and Regional Volunteer of Year Award Winner. The winning awards were presented by the Honourable Anthony Roberts MP Member for Lane Cove. The following are our regional category winners;
Wayne Lyne, 2009 Sydney North Volunteer of the Year
Wayne Lyne of Forestville. Wayne has been 30 years with the Warringah Pittwater Unit of the State Emergency Service and is now local controller in charge of up to 6-10 volunteers. His SES career began at the age of 17 when he became part of a “road rescue team” after a bus crash at Kempsey in which 35 people died. Wayne spends on average 20 hours a week on activities relating to the SES and through his persistence the unit’s vehicles and accommodation have been upgraded from previously inadequate resources
Ron Snelling, 2009 Sydney North Senior Volunteer of the Year
Ron Snelling of Warriewood is integral to Jacaranda Day Activity and Respite Centre in Warriewood. Ron works on both days the centre is operating, driving the bus that collects and returns the clients and cooking the meals for clients and volunteers. He work is very physical, caring for the frail and elderly and requiring great patience.
Tamara Paulin, 2009 Sydney North Youth Volunteer of the Year
Tamara Paulin, of Berowra Heights at 19, is by far the youngest member of the Hornsby-Ku-ring-gai catering brigade of the NSW Rural Fire Service. She joined three years ago and is now seen as a core member of the team during the fire season. Feeding the fire fighters and officials involved. Members of the catering brigade are especially trained to be aware of any first aid issues amongst fire fighters, especially heat stress and related problems.
The 2009 NSW Volunteer of the Year Award Ceremony room was filled with joyous emotions, happy tears and great prosperity for Volunteering. And we look forward to another inspiring year that our volunteers will bring.
